U.S. Embassy, Institute of International Education sponsor higher education linkages conference

The Embassy of the United States of America and the Institute of International Education-Ethiopia, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, sponsored a two-day conference, "Building Sustainable U.S.-Ethiopian University Partnerships," for Ethiopian and American higher education officials. The conference entertained representation from Ethiopia’s 22 public universities, and several private institutions, as well as Ministry of Education officials. Representatives of 10 U.S. universities were in attendance, as well as senior officials from the Institute of International Education’s New York headquarters.

Institute of International Education (IIE) Ethiopia and the U.S. Embassy organized the U.S.-Ethiopian University Partnerships conference in response to Ethiopia’s rapid expansion of higher education opportunities throughout the country and the expressed desire of universities and colleges in both the U.S. and Ethiopia to increase the quality and quantity of exchanges and partnerships. A design team of eight Ethiopian educators and administrators from the Ministry of Education and several public and private universities served as consultants on the conference content and format.

Conference sessions showcased models for successful partnerships, provide tools to better manage established partnerships, and create awareness of institutions and initiatives that support higher education development globally and in the region. Participants also got the chance to network and brainstorm with colleagues and higher education counterparts in both countries. Four practical workshop sessions were offered on the following topics: 1) Developing a Strategic Partnership Program for the 21st Century; 2) Steps to Designing a Research Collaboration; 3) Managing International Partnerships for Success and Sustainability; and 4) New Models for Successful Exchange Programs.

In order to spur U.S.-Ethiopian higher education initiatives following the conference, U.S. Ambassador Booth also announced a small grant competition for university partnership seed money. (Press Release) --Capital
